2023 HLS Movie Award: Best Actress Nominees

Welcome back to the 4th Annual HLS Movie Award, in this piece we are going to go over the nominees for best actress! Now as always, I do not split up supporting or lead, if they were the best acting performance of the year, they deserve the credit no matter their screentime. I am very happy to say we have two returning nominees back on the list this year, both were nominated for their performances in 2020 films. Now with the number of nominees, as always, I do not have a select number to fill out or a cut off. The best of the best gets nominated whether that be 5 people or 15. Excellence deserves recognition.

As a quick reminder the performances had to be in a film released to the mass public IN 2022. Not some film that only the people at a certain film festival or select few that get screeners have seen, to be eligible the film has to be widely released. On to the nominees!

In alphabetical order by last name

Angela Bassett - Black Panther Wakanda Forever

This was simply a powerhouse performance and quite possibly the best performance in the mcu's history. So much love, heart, passion and ferocity in one outstanding performance.

Haley Bennett - Cyrano

    previously nominated for Swallow (2020)

Wow is Haley Bennett talented; I truly believe she is going to be in the awards conversations for decades to come if she so chooses.

Cate Blanchett - Tar

We all know how incredibly talented Cate Blanchett is and this time out we got to see the stern passion drive the role.

Hong Chau - The Whale

Going into this movie I kept hearing over and over how good Brandon Fraser was, but wow did Hong Chau stand toe to toe with him and put on a powerful performance as it unfolds.

Viola Davis - The Woman King

previously nominated for Ma Rainey's Black Bottom (2020)

Viola Davis might have the largest range of any working actor in Hollywood. Put her in ANY role and I bet she will succeed.

Mia Goth - Pearl

The doe eyed wonder of this performance after just seeing her in the previous film really drives home how well she did to separate herself in this film.

Stephanie Hsu - Everything Everywhere All At Once

I need opening night tickets to whatever Stephanie Hsu does, we are just at the tip of the iceberg with the great performances she can pull off. So much emotional range in this film.

Lashana Lynch - The Woman King

This movie as a whole is weirdly overlooked during this award season but Lashana Lynch in particular. Lynch put on an outstanding performance and deserves recognition for it.

Andrea Riseborough - To Leslie

If you have been following award season news and see people complain about her getting nominations, just know whoever lodged that complaint never watched this film. Wow is she great.

Margot Robbie - Babylon

To be straightforward, going into this film I expected the film itself to be the highlight but came out wanting to see Margot Robbie take an award chasing few years of her career and really dive into some deep roles.

Michelle Yeoh - Everything Everywhere All At Once

I am not sure I can say anything about this performance that hasn't been already said by others so I will just say the outstanding work she does with her eyes and mouth in this film should be taught in every acting class.
