#HLSBets CFB Week 5 Recap, Top 25, Rundown and More!
This weeks big action got kicked off with some Friday night lights and two undefeated Big Ten teams faced off with Iowa taking advantage of the spotlight and demolishing Maryland 51-14 cementing themselves in the top 5, but let's see how long they hold onto it. BYU continues to be the worst good team in the country, just a scrappy squad who is somehow 5-0 after beating Utah State 34-20 and now are officially the Kings of Utah for 2021. Arkansas was just reminded what a real contender looks like, getting shellacked 37-0 by Georgia who took their foot off the peddle up 21-0 with two minutes left in the first quarter. Michigan got another win moving to 5-0 but it was a very unimpressive win over Wisconsin, even though the scoreboard said 38-17, stats and the eyeball test wonders why they could not run it up on this pitiful Badger team. Wake Forest keeps winning, we have to keep respecting them before they go on their eventual skid but they beat Louisville 37-34 and survived another week in the lowly ACC.
Cincinnati congratulations! You have won the chance to get blown out by Alabama or Georgia in the first round of the College Football Playoffs! Just please sign below that you will not Clemson before the end of the season and your ranking will soon reflect your outcome after beating Notre Dame 24-13. My favorite team in the country, the fighting demon chickens, continued their streak of dominating the Sun Belt as Coastal Carolina demolished Louisiana Monroe 59-6. Burnt popcorn was served in Tuscaloosa as Alabama's defense rose from 2011 to beatdown the high powered Ole Miss offense as the Crimson Tide won 42-21. I called it on the #HLSBets bonus sheet that this Oregon Ducks team struggles to keep their eye on the ball and they might have let their CFP hopes slide through their fingers losing to Stanford 31-24. I mean this Oklahoma team is one billion percent joining the Clemsons and Oregons that just get upset by a team that has no business beating them, it just was not this week surviving 37-31 over Kansas State.
Ohio State is back! They beat the powerhouse...Rutgers? Winning 52-13 over Rutgers is what you are supposed to do, chill out Buckeye fans just keep chipping away and you will be back in CFP contention. Okay, I am not going to be someone who tries to flip this into Kentucky is amazing, congrats to them being 5-0 in the SEC but Florida really beat themselves in this 13-20 loss. Congrats NC State? You beat La Tech 34-27, man when can we quit pretending to care about the ACC this season? Week 7? In a not so surprising lost the embarrassingly bad Aggies lost to that "sorry" football team Mississippi State 22-26. Will Rodgers might be setting SEC yardage records this season for the Bulldogs. In the only Big 12 matchup I have really been interested in without a blueblood Jaylen Warren carried the Oklahoma State team on his back 36 times for 3.5 ypc in this 24-14 ugly win over Baylor. Congrats Penn State you got revenge 24-0 over Indiana, still screw you for making us put up with their overrated trash last season.
Man talk about barely deserving respect but they keep winning so we have to, Michigan State scrapped by Western Kentucky holding onto win 48-31. Clemson fans I almost feel sorry for yall but hey you beat undefeated Boston College 19-13? Bo Nix got his starting job back and led the Auburn Tigers to their first win in the real Death Valley since 1999 and had a game winning drive to put them ahead 24-19 in the last three minutes of the game. Thank you Arizona State for ridding us of pretending to care about UCLA, winning 42-23. But even more so, thank you so much Hawai'i for beating Fresno State 27-24, how embarassing to CFB if we had to keep having them ranking in the top 25.

Bets I Should Have Won
79 Over Ole Miss +15
Arkansas Georgia 50 Over
First off my popcorn WAS ready. I was looking forward to an amazing shootout in Tuscaloosa but the Ole Miss offense just couldn't get it up against the revived Alabama defense. Ending with 63 total points hurt, but then Ole Miss was in striking distance at 42-21 to keep the +15 alive but just could not get the ball back. Alabama's offense kept their end of the total up but the whatever the mascot is in Oxford these days could not.
Arkansas got brought out back and whipped by Georgia, it was over before Sam Pittman started sweating through his white shirt. Come on big guy to big guy, don't do that to yourself. But then Georgia just stopped. They had 21 points before the end of the first quarter and it seemed that this 50 point total over was a lock, but then Georgia went on to run the ball FIFTY-SIX times just murdering the clock, with no JT Daniels out there to spark some excitement in the very minimal number of throws this game ended up being a 37-0 snooze fest.
Heisman Frontrunners
+100 Bryce Young
+125 Matt Corral
+1400 Desmond Ridder
+4000 Kenny Pickett
Bryce Young took back the Heisman favorite spot riding Brian Robinson for thirty-six carries and 4 TDs, jokes aside Young had a great game throwing 20/26 for 241 and two TDs but did throw his second interception. Matt Corral needs a serious remainder of the season to stay in contention after that game, his numbers look fine throwing 21/29 but only 213 yards in a game where you were behind from get go and he just could never make THE throw to extend drives or score.
Why is Desmond Ridder up here? It solely feels like a money grab by Vegas "tricking" people into thinking his stock has shot all the way up to three while in reality he is not in the discussion, save your money.
Save it for a real wild card like Kenny Pickett. Go ahead I will wait for my applause after correctly calling this last week. Pitt is on a bye week this week so his numbers might shift big this weekend but then they are traveling to Blacksburg to take on VT and if he takes care of business there, he will have his big stage moment taking on Clemson October 23rd.
JT Daniel's Heisman Race
Oklahoma
Ed Orgeron
Man I had been on the JT Daniels Heisman hype train for a long time so here is me admitting defeat, he has now missed too many games to possibly be in contention. I was wrong, that is okay but it does not change how good this Georgia team is. I am just now starting to wonder is this Kirby being smart and protecting a player they will desperately need come December knowing they can win games without him right now, or does JT Daniels have some serious injury prone issues.
Like I said in the rundown, this Oklahoma team feels due for a loss. It is early in the week but I might be leaning Texas finally pulling the rug out from under them and getting their first win in the Red River Shootout since their 48-45 win in 2018. This Oklahoma team is just not clicking and needs to get it together sooner rather than later.
Ed Orgeron's seat might be on fire. And because the college football world is poetic, he might lose this weekend to his eventual replacement Mark Stoops. This LSU squad very easily could be in the beginning of a six game skid if they can not beat Kentucky this weekend.
Buy Stock In
Cincinnati
Ohio State for the CFP
Ugly Football
I personally do not like this team but like I said as long as the Bearcats do not massively screw up, they might have just punched their ticket to the College Football Playoffs. Look at the rest of their schedule, Temple, UCF, @Navy, @Tulane, Tulsa, @USF, SMU, @ECU. Realistically that SMU game is their biggest, and only, challenge left. This might be the year a Non Power 5 team makes the playoffs if another Power 5 contender does not reveal themselves.
Buy back in, it is happening. Ohio State is going to be #3 in the College Football Playoffs barring getting upset. But I am combining these last two because Ugly Football is running the CFB world right now and the kings of it are facing off this weekend in Penn State @ Iowa. Let us just make the assumption that the higher ranked team wins, Iowa does not play Ohio State this entire regular season so that turns the Big Ten Championship into a play in game. The CFP committee respects Ohio State but they do not care about the rest of the Big Ten so even if Iowa is 12-1 losing to Ohio State they will not make it in, this leaves the door for undefeated Cincy sliding in at 4.
