Lets go
Category : Best Picture
1. The Father
2. Judas and the Black Messiah
3. Mank
4. Minari
5. Nomadland
6. Promising Young Woman
7. Sound of Metal
8. The Trial of the Chicago 7
The two only real "surprises" here are, I am happy surprised that Promising Young Woman was nominated, incredible movie just is not top ten for me, and what in the hell does Another Round have to do to get this nomination. People being too lazy to read subtitles astounds me, you should have subtitles on 24/7 anyways in case you miss a word here or there, get over yourself or admit you are a slow reader and that is why you do not like them
Category: Actor in a Leading Role
Riz Ahmed - Sound of Metal
Chadwick Boseman - Ma Rainey's Black Bottom
Anthony Hopkins - The Father
Gary Oldman - Mank
Steven Yeun - Minari
I adore each actor on this list but someone NEEDS to be bumped off for Mads Mikkelsen in Another Round. Why not expand this category to seven or eight?? Where the hell is Delroy Lindo???
Category: Actor in a Supporting Role
Sacha Baron Cohen - Trial of the Chicago 7
Daniel Kaluuya - Judas and the Black Messiah
Leslie Odom jr. - One Night in Miami
Paul Raci - Sound of Metal
Lakeith Stanfield - Judas and the Black Messiah
This is where my confusion comes in, if you can have both Kaluuya and Stanfield here why is Boseman in leading category? Viola Davis is the lead of Ma Rainey's. I am over the moon at Paul Raci's nomination I have been cheering for him to get one since seeing Sound of Metal. I repeat WHERE is Delroy Lindo??
Category: Actress in a Leading Role
Viola Davis - Ma Rainey's Black Bottom
Andra Day - The United States v Billie Holiday
Vanessa Kirby - Pieces of a Woman
Frances McDormand - Nomadland
Carey Mulligan - Promising Young Woman
Elisabeth Moss and Haley Bennett not getting nominations is a travesty.
Category: Actress in a Supporting Role
Maria Bakalova - Borat 2
Glenn Close - Hillbilly Elegy
Olivia Coleman - The Father
Amanda Seyfried - Mank
Yuh-Jung Youn - Minari
Zero disrespect to Glenn Close and Maria Bakalova, they should not be on this list take your pick whichever you want kick them off and add Olivia Cooke for Sound of Metal
Category: Animated Feature Film
Onward
Over the Moon
A Shaun the Sheep Movie : Farmageddon
Soul
Wolfwalkers
I am in shock that Shaun the Sheep is on this list, I mean put Trolls World Tour on here I guess but just stunned I guess someone had to be the fifth option?
Category: Cinematography
Judas and the Black Messiah
Mank
News of the World
Nomadland
The Trial of the Chicago 7
No real shocks here aside from a little one in Tenet nor Minari getting a nod here.
Category: Best Director
Thomas Vinterberg - Another Round
David Fincher - Mank
Lee Isaac Chung - Minari
Chloe Zhao - Nomadland
Emerald Fennell - Promising Young Woman
Okay once again I am confused, I am happy for Thomas Vinterberg getting a nomination here but where is his Best Picture nom? It received a nomination (and hopefully easy win) of Best International Feature and he is surrounded by four other directors who received Best Picture noms, but not one for Another Round. Disappointing.
Category: Best Original Score
Terence Blanchard - Da 5 Bloods
Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross - Mank
Emile Mosseri - Minari
James Newton Howard - News of the World
Jon Batiste Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross - Soul
Here is one way I am proud of the Oscars for absolutely nailing this category aside from one left off (Blake Neely's Greyhound), but one had to go. I am also really happy Terence Blanchard getting a nomination here for his outstanding score for a movie filled with issues.
Overall thoughts:
I am shocked but happy the Oscars stayed away from Da 5 Bloods, too many award shows have been rewarding this messy movie with nominations it did not deserves. But then they screwed that up because they left off the second best part of the movie in Delroy Lindo, his performance deserves at minimum a nomination. Still pissed that Another Round did not get a Best Picture nomination. I feel like we have some heavy favorites in multiple categories with The Father, Judas the Black Messiah Mank, Minari, Nomadland, and Sound of Metal. I cannot wait for Oscars night April 25th!
