Loki Episode 5 : Recap, Breakdown and Theories! Spoilers!
Welcome back to HLS Entertainment today we are going through the incredible penultimate episode to Loki on Disney+. Episode 5 was filled so much so as always this is a SPOILER recap and breakdown, do not read further if you have not seen the episode.
Weekly reminder that these breakdowns are NOT the full in-depth Easter egg breakdowns. You can find incredible ones all over YouTube. I recommend New Rockstars channel. They do great work. This breakdown is just going to cover breaking down the major story points and how that effects the show going forward and discussing all the crazy theories.
Please share this with your friends on social media, and do not hesitate to hit me up on twitter @HaroldLStokes if you want to tell me your theories for the show as well I would love to hear! On to the breakdown!
We open with a pan over the void as it slowly comes down to Loki being swiftly greeted by the four Lokis we saw in the post credit scene of episode 4. "This is the void that is Alioth and we're his lunch. Come on!" Real quick right into action of our Loki following them as the hurry away from the gigantic cloud monster that makes Rise of the Silver Surfer blush. Except this time, it is a comic accurate depiction. Alioth IS a real character from the comics. Alioth has been generally the force that keeps our favorite unseen Conqueror in check in his control of time.
Yes this is going to be slightly out of order as I am piecing some scenes together. As always I am just writing a recap not trying for dramatic film timing. Ravonna admits to Sylvie that "deletion" is not actually killing someone, they are sent to the void at the end of time. This goes along with the theory of all clipped branches fell somewhere, they fell to the void, literally. Miss Minutes stops Sylvie from trying to kill Ravonna by bringing up the fake prototype "Void ship" designed to withstand the void. This ship obviously does not exist and Minute Men show up to take out Sylvie. As Sylvie is hiding behind the Judge's bench, Ravonna tells her she will not delete her but instead will lock her in a time loop, maybe a happy memory. This threat of a time loop seems to click the idea in her brain that deleting herself would actually work and she would be sent to the Void.
We return seeing the Lokis in the Void still on the run but Loki just keeps wanting answers and goes on a rant being loud, understandably frustrated wanting answers as to what in the world is going on. The rant continues until Kid Loki stops him, threatening him with his dagger. Which by the way, we have ZERO confirmation to this to my knowledge but I am calling it that it is Laevateinn, Loki's ancestral sword as seen in the Loki Agent of Asgard comic. Laevateinn means "damaged twig" which is a hilarious name for a sword.
"You'll do well to respect the boy this is his kingdom" Classic Loki tells our Loki. This is when Kid Loki reveals his Nexus event was him killing Thor. That revelation is a show stopper and is obviously something the TVA would notice. We get the statement of Loki's are survivors, that is why they are alive in the void. We finally arrive to their lair and Richard E Grant's Classic Loki uses magic to unlock it. As I said before this is not an Easter egg breakdown but we get a few here that are too fun to not mention. While running through the void we see things like the giant helmet of Ant-Man villain Yellow Jacket, a statue of the head and three faces of the Living Tribunal, the Thanos copter, and my personal favorite, Throg stuck in a jar trying to reach Mjolnir.
We now get inside the bowling alley lair of the Lokis. Pay attention if you missed it I just thought it awesome that Croki walked around everyone and slid down the ramp as the camera panned showing off the full liar. The group of five Lokis kick back and are drinking Roxxon boxed wine and swapping stories. Boastful Loki lies bragging that his Nexus event was he killed both Ironman and Captain America and claimed all six Infinity Stones as his prize. Croki grumbles calling him a liar, they tussle for a moment Croki goes for his hand biting it. After they are broken up Kid Loki tells Classic Loki to tell him his story. We find out that Classic Loki is essentially our same Loki but instead of trying to kill Thanos he created an illusion so perfect that even Thanos did not know it, and everyone who had that theory about Infinity War screamed. But this is not a happy ending story, he disguised himself as debris and floated off into space in the destruction. Classic Loki tells them he spent a long time in space thinking about his life and came to the conclusion he is the issue, wherever he goes death follows. That eventually after countless years being alone he came out of hiding and the TVA found him. We get the toast of "god of outcasts, nothing more", this is a sad look at how Loki's life could have gone but our Loki is getting his shot at redemption.
Our Loki seeing his sad potential history of Classic Loki riles him up. Classic Loki tells him he really missed his brother Thor. Loki proclaims he is getting out of this place, gives a rousing speech trying to get them to help him take on Alioth, but the group breaks out laughing and Loki goes off to leave by himself. As he opens the hatch to leave, Loki is greeted by about ten more Lokis waiting there. We go back into the lair where it is revealed Boastful Loki betrayed Kid Loki to get the throne, but then President Loki reveals he is double crossing him, and the double cross off goes on and on until all the Lokis are fighting each other. We see Croki bite off President Lokis hand, he apparently loves biting hands. The hilarity in this scene is keeping your eyes on our Loki, as he rolls his eyes constantly at all this and tip toes through all the fighting to try to escape. Classic Loki conjures illusions of himself, our Loki, Kid Loki and Croki as well as opening a portal for them to escape through. Kid Loki carrying Croki is adorable.
Sylvie wakes up in a giant bird's nest in the back of a bus, and works her way forward breaking through the front glass as Alioth is closing in on her. While running, jumping and sliding Sylvie connects at one point with Alioth and sees through it getting a blink and you miss it view of a portal that leads to the giant floating rock we saw in the trailer. We do not only see the rock but we VERY quickly zoom in on it seeing the door we see Loki walking up to in the trailer as well, and the camera speeds up an astronomy / watchtower that inevitably will be where are show meets its final climax.
After this vision it seems like she is about to get caught by Alioth but Mobius comes over the horizon driving a pizza delivery car that I have to assume can be taken as a Toy Story Pizza Planet reference. As they make their escape they have a chat about what needs to be done to stop the TVA.
The four Loki's walk up to where Alioth is going to be and we see a battleship that has been deleted land in the void (this is a real world Easter egg look up USS Eldridge). Alioth very quickly eats the ship and Loki realizes his plan of trying to kill it is helpless. We have seen Loki go on and on about how Sylvie is different and special, that she is the only one that he does actually trust. We see Sylvie and Mobius arrive in the pizza delivery car, and we get a sweet reunion between our three protagonists. Sylvie calls out Loki's plan to kill it for how dumb it is. Sylvie explains her theory that Alioth is actually the guard dog and the key to getting to whomever is behind the TVA. She explains their best course of action is for her to enchant it to get past it.
We return to the TVA and see Judge Renslayer go into a Time Theater and we find out Hunter B-15 is locked in a cell within the wall hidden. Wunmi calls Ravonna out, saying they are all being lied to, to which Renslayer simply says 'why do you think that changes anything?' This shows Ravonna clearly cracking and upset but drives the question is it a 'oh no we are found out?' or just her freaking out but just still holding onto power greedily. B-15 tells her that the need for revenge is what is driving Sylvie and is why she will figure out this secret before Ravonna because she only wants it. As she leaves Renslayer pulls up Miss Minutes and orders her to bring up all the files pertaining to the beginning of time and the TVA. She says whoever created the TVA is in danger and she needs to find them to help. This still begs the question, is she still covering even to Miss Minutes or what?
In our calm before the storm scene we get our group of heroes at a destroyed barbershop. Mobius is inside by the fire with Classic Loki, Kid Loki and Croki. They have a discussion about whether or not Croki is even a real Loki variant. While they chat inside, Loki and Sylvie are outside sitting on the slope talking, Loki conjures a blanket around himself. They talk about Mobius' theory that the Nexus event was the two of them falling in love with each other and like two shy kids neither knows what to do or how to react and scoffs at the idea initially. Sylvie admits she does not know how to have friends or relationships as she has never really had any after spending her entire life on the run. Loki reconjures the blanket to go around both of them. Sylvie has a quiet moment asking how can she trust that he will not betray her in the end, this is an innocent moment of concern showing how alone they truly have been. They joke about the outcome of all of this, maybe there will be a timeline for Loki to rule, and he jokes that he would "finally be happy", but they conclude maybe they can just figure it out together.
We now see the six of them waiting on a hill, ready for Alioth to arrive, Loki decides to stay and help Sylvie giving the TemPad to Mobius. Mobius offers to take the other Lokis with him but they decline deciding to stay and survive there. Kid Loki gives our Loki his dagger, and the trio of Lokis leave. Mobius says he is going back to burn the TVA to the ground, but we get a hugging embrace between Mobius and Loki, Loki calls him his friend. This is once again a bittersweet moment for Loki as this might honestly be his first real friend he has ever had.
Time for the showdown with Alioth. As Alioth shows up Loki goes to distract it while Sylvie tries to enchant the giant smoke creature. We see Loki's distraction work momentarily but then he fails as Alioth turns back to Sylvie. This is where we get Classic Loki's glorious return, conjuring the greatest illusion we have ever seen in the MCU as he brings a full sized Asgard illusion into the void. This gigantic city is exactly the snack Alioth is looking for as he turns his attack towards Classic Loki. This magnificent illusion clicks in Loki's head that maybe they are much more powerful than they realize, as Sylvie and Loki join hands and work together to enchant the distracted Alioth. As they work together they are successful and open the portal to the giant floating rock from the trailer.
Let us get into some safe and some wild possibilities for the finale. What an incredible episode, I am one hundred percent bought in that we will see Kang or at least a version of him in the finale. A question that I have is some people were working under the assumption that the TVA was in the void of space time, this episode makes me believe even more that the TVA is the bubble city in Ant-Man and the Wasp.
How I see next episode going is we see a climactic fight on two fronts. Mobius and Hunter B-15 inside the TVA trying to liberate their fellow TVA members into remembering their real lives and taking on Renslayer and Sylvie and Loki fighting their way into this castle on a space rock and battling it out with whomever is inside. But who is inside? I still believe it will be Kang and that we will see Sylvie and Loki try to take him out but fail to do so, setting him up as this unstoppable force.
Another possibility as to what this castle on a rock floating in nothingness is that it is really the House of Ideas. The House of Ideas is the home of the One Above All. The One Above All is the supreme ruler of the multiverse, we could quite possibly see Loki and Sylvie go in there and fight angelic beings as they make their way to the tower. Once there they could convince the One Above All that the TVA has become corrupt and strike a deal with them to help manage the multiverse, therefore opening up for season two of Loki as well as having the multiverse fully in place setting up Doctor Strange Multiverse of Madness.
